An immersive new museum is illuminating the art scene in San Diego with interactive exhibits from internationally known artists. Welcome to WNDR.
By Allison Mitchell
What began as a pop-up in Chicago in 2018 has become one of the Windy City’s top destinations for interactive art. Now, WNDR Museum (wndrsandiego.com) is heading to the West Coast, bringing its technology-driven elan to a 14,000-square-foot space on Market Street in the Gaslamp Quarter. Slated to open in January, viewers can expect more than 20 exhibits that celebrate light, sound and color through multisensory displays that invite guests to touch and play.
“San Diego is home to a dynamic, inclusive art scene and we’re thrilled to provide a new unique environment to showcase both internationally acclaimed artists and incredible local talent,” says Ryan Kunkel, president of WNDR Global. “We’re honored to join the ranks of San Diego’s world-class cultural institutions and hope to become a lasting contributor to the community.”
Those contributions include a dancing Lightfloor by Brightlogic and WNDR Studios, which transforms as you move across it, and 360-degree spaces including Adrian Stein’s Quantam Mirror and the stateside debut of Insidious by Germany’s Leigh Sachwitz and flora&faunavisions. While San Diego will become WNDR’s second-ever locale, locations in Boston and Seattle are on the horizon. Simply wonderful!
